ufc 139 post fight presser recap..........

Summary from the UFC 139 post fight press conference:

Dan Henderson and Mauricio “Shogun” Rua were taken directly to the hospital and didn’t attend the presser.

Dana White said the Henderson vs. Shogun scrap was easily one of the top 3 fights of all time. That was MMA’s Ali/Frazier III.

White professed Henderson can compete for the title at middleweight and light heavyweight.

He still wouldn’t have changed the FOX fight (Velasquez/Dos Santos) to Shogun/Hendo. The MMA world appreciated it, but their new market wouldn’t have understood the war that went on tonight. They need to take baby steps to educating the mainstream market.

Urijah Faber can’t wait to fight Dominick Cruz again.

Wanderlei Silva doesn’t look at the win as though he shut up his detractors. He’s just pleased he could make his fans happy.

White reiterated that the company loves Wandy and they will not allow him to stick around too long. When it’s time, they will talk.

Martin Kampmann wasn’t too happy about his performance in the opening round. He knew he got the last two rounds. He thought he might get hosed by the judges again, though.

Silva claimed Le’s kicks hurt pretty badly.

White said he doesn’t care either way if Henderson fights at 185 or 205. Although Hendo preciously said he doesn’t want to cut to middleweight, White said he knows Henderson will take a title fight if it’s there.

White is mad that the ref didn’t step in to save Tom Lawlor before he went to sleep. (MDA's thoughts: is this the ref who supposedly is the fat ass that reffed the Faber vs Bowles fight??? I missed Tom Lawlor's fight as I was at the gym working on my triceps and laterall muscles.)

He felt the stoppage in Le’s fight was warranted because his face is busted up right now. He prefers for fights to be stopped too early than too late.

White confirms Rashad Evans (205), Chael Sonnen (185) and Faber (135) are the top contenders in their respective divisions.

The early attendance number was 13,173 and garnered $1.268 million at the gate.

White didn’t confirm the date for the UFC’s return to Brazil. He stated he’s not sure if Anderson Silva will be on the card, but he said it with a sheepish smile (hint, hint).

Faber is convinced Cruz is not a better fighter than him and is anxious to prove who is better once and for all.

White confirmed Faber vs. Cruz III will not headline the UFC’s next show on FOX.

Faber credits his “Hippie parents” for his healthy life. His mom used to drink wheatgrass when he was in the womb.

White says next year’s schedule is going to be hectic with the way “The Ultimate Fighter” is set up, but he expects great TV numbers.

Faber pushes White to let him and Cruz coach opposite each other on next season of TUF.

White thinks Michael McDonald looked awesome.

Why did you choose stephan bonnar over kyle kingsbury

"I've never been impressed with Kingsbury and I think Bonnar has more to lose. I also think he's has much bigger level of competition under his belt whether he's won or lost, and he's been in some wars. I'm not really a fan of either fighter, but I will stick with Bonnar trying to make a statement on the tail end of his career."

Shogun & Hendo Bringing ‘PRIDE’ Back To The UFC

Picture
BY: Mike McPhee
UFC 139 is this Saturday from San Jose California. In the main event two MMA superstars will go head to head in what should be a fan friendly fight. Dan Henderson & Mauricio ‘Shogun‘ Rua will step into the octagon & face each other for the first time. Both were stars in Japan but their paths have never crossed.

Both men bring a stacked resume into this fight but Dan Henderson’s is a little longer. Being the first fighter to hold championships in two weight classes at the same time sets him apart from most fighters. Henderson adding the Strikeforce light heavyweight championship earlier this year to his long list of accomplishments was just icing on the cake. Or was it? Henderson may not be done. A win over Shogun will line him up at a title shot against current UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones. More gold may be in his future if he has his way.

Shogun won the UFC light heavyweight championship after his destruction of Lyoto Machida at UFC 113. This was the second major championship of his career. Back in 2005 a very young Shogun won the Pride Middleweight Grand Prix championship. At that time his career could go nowhere but up. Injuries did slow him down but capturing his first UFC championship cemented his place as one of the best in the world.

Winner of Guida vs henderson to face edgar in japan!

Picture
LOS ANGELES – Maybe fighting on Facebook isn't the worst thing in the world.

While many MMA fans and pundits have expressed their frustration that a key UFC on FOX lightweight matchup between Clay Guida (29-11 MMA, 9-5 UFC) and Ben Henderson (14-2 MMA, 2-0 UFC) has been relegated to the evening's Facebook-streamed undercard, it appears UFC brass is still dangling a rather large carrot in front of the winner.

MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) has learned from multiple sources close to the promotion that the winner of the Guida vs. Henderson matchup is expected to receive an immediate title shot against current lightweight champ Frankie Edgar (14-1-1 MMA, 9-1-1 UFC).

Guida and Henderson meet in the co-feature of Saturday night's UFC on FOX 1 event, which sees heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez defend his belt against Junior Dos Santos in Anaheim, Calif. The main event airs on FOX.

While an exact date for the fight with Edgar would certainly depend on the condition of the Guida vs. Henderson winner, multiple sources suggested the UFC's planned February event in Japan is the preferred destination. The organization, which hasn't promoted a show in the country since UFC 29 in late 2000, heads to Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan, on Feb. 26, 2012.

To accommodate the traditional live North American broadcasting on Saturday night, Feb. 25, the event is expected to take place Sunday morning at 10 a.m. local time. Officials haven't determined broadcast plans or event naming for the show, and no broadcast plans have been announced for North America.

Edgar, of course, fought most recently at this past month's UFC 136 event, where he defeated top contender Gray Maynard via fourth-round TKO. The clash capped off an epic trilogy between the two, which ended in a dead heat at 1-1-1. However, with Edgar earning the lone stoppage in the series, many fans and pundits have put aside the need for a fourth meeting between the two rivals.

why a win at ufc 138 will put mark munoz "in the mix."

Picture
by: Chris Ternate

In what will become the UFC's first ever non-title five round bout, Mark Munoz will face his toughest challenge yet, against the highly durable, always dangerous Chris Leben.

However, for Munoz, the fight is not only a landmark in UFC history, but also an opportunity to put himself in an undeniable position as a true contender in the middleweight division.  More importantly, with a win, he'll be one fight away from a title shot.

Having won six out of his last seven fights since his drop to middleweight, "The Filipino Wrecking Machine's" sole loss was to the last man to challenge Anderson Silva for the belt, Yushin Okami.

Since his loss to Okami at UFC Live: Jones vs. Matyushenko, Munoz has gone 3-0, beating the likes of Aaron Simpson, C.B. Dollaway and most recently, former number one middleweight contender, Demian Maia.

Come UFC 138, Munoz's skills will be put to the test against one of the sport's toughest and most tenacious fighters in "The Crippler".

To make things more difficult, the fight will go into the championship rounds, possibly making it one of the most grueling fights he could possibly have, and it won't even be for the belt.

If anybody can survive this sort of gauntlet it would definitely be Munoz, and should he come out with his hand raised it'll be a lot harder to deny him a title shot.

Here are four reasons why a win should put Mark Munoz in line for a title shot.

ultimate trolling: the nick diaz story.

Picture
10/30/11 By: Cody Slovensky
UFC 137 started off very slow, but ended on a positive note. In one night, we witnessed Mirko Cro Cop retire, and Nick Diaz proved that he is 100% ready for the UFC’s elite. Many fans still have their dislike for Diaz for his comments after the event, but that ladies and gentlemen was Nick Diaz “trolling” his way into a title shot.

When you have been “trolled,” that means that someone basically says many things that are annoying, and you let it get to you. GSP was “trolled” by Nick Diaz.

Nick stated that GSP was scared, and that he didn’t want to fight anybody. The camera then showed GSP, and he tried to stay professional for the camera, but everyone could see through him that he was very angry.

During the press conference, Dana left to take a phone call, once he returned he stated that GSP was pissed, and that he wanted to fight Nick. It was announced that Condit would step aside, and that Nick and GSP would face off. GSP said, "he's the most disrespectful human being I've ever met and I'm going to put the worst beating on him." Superbowl weekend, we shall see.

The best Nick Diaz quotes

“If people can’t handle watching me or they can’t handle the intensity of my life or they can’t handle me cussing saying fuck this and fuck, then you know, I think people really need to become a little more mature, kinda grow up a little bit…”

So Nick, would you agree your marijuana smoking has got in the way of your fight career?

“Actually, on the contrary, my fight career has gotten in the way of my marijuana smoking.”

“He just lost again right? See what I mean? You are promoting Rich Franklin and this motherfucker, here he is, letting it ride and he’s just trying to uphold his image. The guy’s a fucking teacher. He’s a school teacher – that’s what he is. If I was going to fight him I’d be pretty damn confident. I’m going to fight a teacher not a fighter. There are plenty of teachers I wanted to beat up.”

“If you’re getting paid more than me, I’m definitely more excited about this ass whoopin I’m gonna put down on you.”

UFC 137: Why Nick Diaz Will Finish BJ Penn

Picture
Many fans often over look Nick Diaz. He is easily in the top five of the most hated-on fighters in MMA. In most cases his talents are overlooked, and he is constantly judged by past actions.

Nick is a very gifted and well rounded fighter, and at UFC 137 he will have the biggest fight of his career when he faces one of his favorite fighters , BJ Penn.

BJ Penn is one of the most well known and dangerous fighters in MMA history. He has fought in multiple weight classes, and has been champion in two of them. He has beat some of the greatest fighters in the world, but the last couple of years, he has had some odd luck.

In his last five fights, BJ has posted a 2-2-1 record. In that span he had fought at both lightweight, and welterweight.

Arona: Rivalry with Wanderlei Created Pride’s History

Picture
In 2005, Ricardo Arona became the first man to defeat Wanderlei Silva in Pride Fighting Championships’ middleweight division. During his Pride stint, the powerful “Brazilian Tiger” also headlined one of the greatest rivalries in MMA’s young history, the clash between Rio de Janeiro’s Brazilian Top Team and Curitiba’s Chute Boxe Academy.

Now 33 years old, Arona lives behind his time of glory in the extinct Japanese promotion, but keeps alive his expectations to return to MMA after a two-year absence. Speaking recently with Sherdog.com, Arona revealed that he considered his feud with Silva crucial to Pride’s success.

“We grew up together in Pride,” said Arona. “He arrived there before me and was already a champion when I debuted. We had a feud in the beginning, but out differences created Pride’s history. It all started with us. I’ve grown up with that, as he did. We faced each other and I have nothing against him. We’ve met outside the ring and had a good, frank chat, and maybe we’ll fight again sometime. Until that happens, I cheer for him. He is a great warrior.”

5 reasons chael sonnen will be ufc champion

Picture
On Saturday night, Chael Sonnen made two things clear.

He doesn't like Anderson Silva, and this time, he's playing for keeps.

After defeating Brian Stann via second round submission, Sonnen had one of the biggest post fight interviews in UFC history, when he laid down a challenge to Anderson Silva.

"Anderson Silva, you absolutely suck. I'm calling you out Silva, but we're upping the stakes. I beat you, you leave the division. You beat me, I'll leave the UFC forever."

That is a huge challenge, and here's five reasons why we won't be seeing Anderson Silva at middleweight for much longer.

ufc 136 post fight bonuses..........

Picture
Four fighters walked away from the Toyota Center in Houston with UFC 136 postfight bonuses, as Frankie Edgar, Joe Lauzon, Nam Phan and Leonard Garcia each took home an extra $75,000 for their efforts on Saturday night.

Edgar was awarded “Knockout of the Night” after disposing of Gray Maynard in their lightweight title headliner, and Lauzon earned “Submission of the Night” for his lightning-quick victory over Melvin Guillard. Phan (Pictured, file photo) and Garcia shared “Fight of the Night” honors for their exciting, three-round affair.

Maynard did not mirror his performance in the first round of his second bout with Edgar, but he came close. The Xtreme Couture fighter rocked the champion with a massive uppercut midway through the round and followed up with sustained offense which bloodied Edgar’s face and hurt him badly. The ever-resilient Edgar survived, however, working diligently to win rounds two and three before stunning the challenger with a right uppercut and pouncing with a flurry of hooks that sealed Maynard’s demise, retaining his title with a fourth-round technical knockout.

Lauzon wasted no time in taking care of business, stunning Guillard with a short left hand only moments into the bout. As a wobbly Guillard shot for a takedown, Lauzon took his back, sinking in both hooks and applying a fight-ending rear-naked choke which forced “The Young Assassin” to tap out only 47 seconds into the opening stanza.

Phan and Garcia did not disappoint in their rematch. The bout largely resembled their first encounter, as Phan landed accurately while Garcia swung for the fences in the first two rounds. However, the Jackson’s MMA product found success in the third stanza, dropping Phan with a left hook and cracking him with another hard shot that wobbled Phan against the cage. Phan would not be denied, and “The Ultimate Fighter” alum was awarded the bout 29-28 on all three judges’ scorecards.

chael sonnen wins and calls out anderson silva.......

Picture
Middleweights Chael Sonnen and Brian Stann were fighting for a title shot at UFC 136.

Sonnen immediately came out and showed why he's the biggest threat to champion Anderson Silva. He immediately forced a clinch, landed some shots and then tripped Stann to the ground. Once there Sonnen reigned for the rest of the round. Taking a variety of dominant positions, Sonnen battered Stann with brutal ground and pound.

UFC 136 results: Chael Sonnen defeats Brian Stann by submission (head and arm triangle) at 3:51 of round 2.

In the second, Sonnen immediately took Stann down with an explosive double leg take down. He opened up with the ground and pound then took Stann's head and cranked it while he moved to side control. Sonnen moved to an utterly smothering mount. Stann locked on tight and Sonnen chest slammed Stann's head into the mat repeatedly. Stann fought to full guard when the ref made an unnecessary stand up. Sonnen immediately forced another clinch then picked Stann up high and slammed him down hard. They landed in side control. Sonnen went for an arm triangle and forced the tap.

After Sonnen tapped out Stann, he called out the middleweight champion Anderson Silva who was sitting cage side.

"Anderson Silva sucks. Super bowl weekend, I'm calling you out. The biggest fight of the year and let's up the stakes: if I win you leave the division and if you win I'll leave the UFC."

Episode No. 3 recap: 'The Ultimate Fighter 14: Team Bisping vs. Team Miller'

Picture
by Dann Stupp on Oct 05, 2011 at 10:55 pm ET

With our first featherweight quarterfinal-round bout in the books, winner Bryan Caraway is looking for some company in the quarterfinals.

He'll get it tonight in the other bracket as the season's first bantamweight fight takes place.

But first, we hop into the usual in-house hijinks.

Episode storylines

At a Team Miller session, head coach Jason "Mayhem" Miller arrives with a couple dozen foam pool floats. His lesson? "Defend yourself at all times." Within seconds, the team members are smacking the crap out of each other with the brightly colored jousting sticks. Fighters such as Steven Siler appreciate the levity and fun.

As Team Mille trains, Michael Bisping enacts revenge for the couple dozen tires the opposing team put in his locker room during the previous episode. So they remove the tires from Miller's car and quietly put them in their dressing room. UFC president Dana White gives the unofficial endorsement of a job well done. After his training session, Miller gets a kick out of it. "It's just begun," he tells the team. "It's actually pretty clever."

UFC champ Jon Jones suffered no serious injuries, but UFC giving him a rest

Picture
Jon Jones entered UFC 135's post-fight press conference with as many ice packs as bruises.

Despite a fourth-submission victory over Quinton "Rampage" Jackson in his first title defense, Jones was issued a six-month medical suspension, and he needed a doctor's examination to rule out any serious injuries.

But UFC president Dana White said Jones essentially got a clean bill of health. Still, he's in no hurry to bring Jones back.

Jones, who's quickly emerged as one of the sport's biggest stars, is next slated to fight top contender Rashad Evans. December's UFC 140 event could use a headliner, but White hinted that Jones, whose medical suspension can end early with a doctor's approval, may not be back before year's end.

It has been about 4 years since a UFC title fight has been on free T.V. With the power of pay-pew-view it does seem odd the UFC would give us a title fight for free. Is it because the UFC is paying back the loyal fans or is because this main event wouldn’t be able to draw on pay-pew-view? Sadly, I am leaning toward the latter but for a reason.

Normally you would never see a Anderson Silva or Georges St. Pierre on a free TV event so why is Dominick Cruz headlining a free event? We can understand why Cain Velasquez is on free TV. It is the first event on network TV for the UFC & they want the ratings for the event on FOX to draw huge so the long term commitment they have entered into gets off on the right foot. The heavyweight division in any sport draws people to their TVs.

For Cruz he is the Bantamweight champion, a new weight class in the UFC. Many causal fans may not be aware of what the WEC was, or who Dominick Cruz is, so a free fight can make this champion familiar to the masses. For the hardcore fan it may feel like an insult to this exciting weight class that they are not being given the same level of respect as the heavier weight classes.

Barry: Reach Disparity Against Struve May Not Be Major Factor

Picture
Much of the talk surrounding Pat Barry’s showdown with Stefan Struve at UFC Live 6 -- which will air on Versus -- has focused on the height differential between the two men. When the heavyweights square off at the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C. on Saturday, Barry says the reach disparity will not be as big a factor as it might seem.

The 32-year-old New Orleans native is accustomed to being at a height disadvantage in most of his bouts. Conversely, he believes the 6-foot-11 Struve does not see too many -- if any -- opponents that are taller than him in the cage.

“In all actuality, I don’t think reach will be that big of a deal in this fight. Everybody that Stefan fights and trains with is shorter than he is, and everybody I spar with is bigger than I am,” Barry said during a pre-fight teleconference. “How often does Stefan fight a guy that’s taller than him? I don’t run into guys that are shorter than I am. I don’t think this fight will make it any different.”

UFC Quick Quote: 'Humble' Chael Sonnen admits Anderson Silva deserves appreciation

Picture
"It's getting harder and harder to deny that (Anderson Silva) shouldn't be shown that appreciation. He ducked Okami for years but he did finally go in there and he made it look easy so I think you've got to look at that. If you're asking if I would ever conceive that Anderson's better than me, no. I would simply refer you to the tape. I think he and I's skills are vastly different. I think I could come down a lot and still be ahead of him. I also thinks he ducks and dodges opponents constantly but listen, his wins and losses speak for themselves and the fact of the matter whether I'd like to admit it or not is he's done a better job than anybody, he's done a better job than me and he is the champion. That doesn't mean that I'm gonna quit poking my finger in his chest but at some point I think fairness needs to kick in too and I think you need to look at what he's done and tip your hat to him a little bit."

UFC on Versus 6: Is Anthony Johnson Hype or Bite?

Picture
By Cody Slovensky (Featured Columnist)

Since 2007, Anthony Johnson has been fighting for the UFC. In that time, it has been nothing but a roller coaster ride for him. He has been sidelined due to knee injury, as well as lost a fight after being poked in the eye. That being said, he has still put together a 6-3 record inside the octagon, and has a chance to put himself “in the mix” Saturday night, that is if he defeats Charlie Brenneman.

Anthony Johnson is a great fighter, but at welterweight is he truly hype or bite?

The biggest concern most people have with Anthony is his size. He is the biggest welterweight in the division, and truly should fight at middleweight and honestly could make light heavyweight. He has had his troubles with his weight, and with the middleweight division being partially slim, sooner or later he may not have a choice but to fight there.

Rampage declares: 'I'm gonna go to boxing'

Picture
Rampage Jackson has revealed he is planning a switch to boxing at the end of his UFC contract, following his humbling loss to Jon Jones at UFC 135.

Jackson, the former light-heavyweight champion, is nearing the end of his MMA career at 33 years of age. His loss to Jones, via fourth-round submission, will surely mark his last assault on a UFC title, although he is still expected to have a rematch - most likely with Forrest Griffin - early next year.

Rampage has long complained at the new generation of fighter, with tactics and ground expertise becoming a necessity as MMA continues to evolve. Jackson made his name with one-punch knockouts against the likes of Chuck Liddell and, later in his career, Wanderlei Silva, and he longs for more shootouts before he hangs up his gloves.

Herman: UFC 136 Withdrawal Due to Positive Marijuana Test

Picture
Dave Herman was wiped from the UFC 136 bill for undisclosed reasons on Wednesday, his bout with Mike Russow replaced by a featherweight rematch between Nam Phan andLeonard Garcia. On Thursday, Herman revealed the reason behind his removal from the card: an apparent failed drug test for marijuana, which he denies.

“It’s disappointing,” Herman told Clinch Gear Radio. “I’ve been training really hard, and I feel like I’m in the best shape I’ve ever been in for a fight, but stuff happens. Maybe it’s for the best, [to] give me some more time to get even better and give an even better show in my next fight.”

Herman asserts that he submitted a urine sample to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation through an independent testing service on Sept. 15. One week later, the heavyweight claims he was called by the commission and told that he would need to resubmit his specimen, as his first sample had been lost.

The Top 35 Fighters Today and Their Worst Career Moments

Picture
Bleacherreport.com
When talking about the best athletes in any sport, there are few lowlights to focus on. However, in a sport with the extreme highs and lows that are experienced in MMA, all of the top fighters have had at least one time in their careers when something didn't go their way.

Even undefeated fighters suffer minor setbacks at one point or another.

For example, rising UFC light heavyweight Phil Davis was given an excellent opportunity when it was announced he would be fighting Rashad Evans at UFC 133. However, an injury spoiled Davis' chance to become a top contender by forcing him out of that bout.

With that in mind, here are the 35 best fighters in MMA and the worst moments of their careers.
